Readers poll: How do you celebrate the Fourth of July?

I’ve been up since 7 am  in preparation for today’s celebration. Our plans are small as our family is scattered.  On the menu: grilled hamburgers, grilled corn,  kebabs of squash,  tomato, onion,  and zucchini, my mom’s potato salad,  watermelon,  grilled pineapple with vanilla ice cream and chocolate sauce, and peach ice tea. We might take in some fireworks later.

What makes up your celebration?  Is there something you have to have or something you have to do? Do you have any time honored traditions? What makes the Fourth of July the Fourth for you? What makes it special?

I’d love to hear your traditions , comments,  and recipes if you’re willing to share. Either post a comment or send me an email. I’ll feature some of them in the food and recipe page.

Happy celebrating and a big thank you to our servicemen and servicewomen, veterans,  police,  firefighters,  and emergency personnel for giving your lives and service every day.

  1. One thing I love to do for the 4th since moving to Boston years ago is watching the Boston Pops on TV and then sitting on our roof or deck to watch the fireworks over the Charles River. Some years we don’t have any other big plans besides being sure to turn on that grill and crack open a beer, and last year we actually braved the crowds and went down to the river. But this year we did a weekend trip to NH and so I was excited to find out we’d be back in time to honor this tradition of the Pops/Fireworks.
